Skype video messaging emerges from beta

Skype logoA big reason that video phones never took off was that many people didn't want the person calling to see them. It's understandable really -- no one wants to take a call from their boss while wearing nothing but their underwear.

Skype somewhat solves this problem with the ability to schedule a call for when you are looking your best, and now the Microsoft-owned communications app allows users to send video messages for those times when it isn't convenient to chat face to face.

Microsoft's Yasmin Khan says that the company is "excited to announce that video messaging is now coming out of preview as a full-fledged (and free!) feature in Skype" (for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and BlackBerry).

The feature rolled out in preview mode back in early May, but today it emerges from those shackles as a full-blown addition, available for all users of the popular service (as long as they can run the app). You can send and receive as many of these video messages as you wish -– completely free of charge. Video messages can be received and viewed on any platform or device capable of running Skype.

Those unfamiliar with this feature can visit this FAQ on the Support section of the site. Just remember to look presentable when recording your message and no sexting!
