Opera posts record growth in mobile usage for December 2012

Opera logoOpera Software’s mobile browsers are increasingly popular among end users, and the latest data coming from the company is meant to prove that once again.

In December 2012, the company’s Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers have seen the greatest growth in usage on a monthly basis since their launch in 2006, the company announced.

Opera Mini was used by over 208 million people in December 2012, Opera announced. Furthermore, over 21 million have used Opera Mobile to surf the Internet that month, it seems.

With a total mobile user base of 229 million at the end of the month, Opera registered a growth of 13 million users when compared to November 2012.

Furthermore, Opera also announced that its Opera Mini browser had compressed no less than 12 petabytes of data in December last year.

For those out of the loop, we should note that this is one of the most appealing features of the mobile browser, as it can compress web pages by up to 90 percent before sending them to the user’s phone.

“Opera Mini uses compression technology to minimize data usage and lower the threshold for accessing the internet on mobile device, by enabling nearly all devices, smart and non-smart, to go online,” Opera notes.

Opera Mini has seen increased popularity in various regions around the world, Opera notes, adding that the Asia Pacific region was one of the first to adopt the application.

“In this State of the Mobile Web report, we take a quick look at the history of the Opera Mini user numbers and trends in different regions of the world, namely the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the Europe and Russia region, Americas region as well as the Middle East and Africa region,” the company notes.
