AMD offers $50,000 in prizes for OpenCL contest

AMD logoAMD is kicking off an OpenCL coding competition for devs. The contest - managed in conjunction with TopCoder - challenges software engineers to code apps that take advantage of both OpenCL and APU architecture.

A cool $50,000 in prizes will be awarded to winning submissions.

"We're at an inflection point in the computing industry with evolving chip architectures and the shift to common programming interfaces and industry standards, which enable developers to enable amazing new experiences," AMD corporate VP Manju Hegde told Fusion Summit attendees.

"The OpenCL Coding Competition is just the beginning of a new wave of app development by the software community as it [moves towards] heterogeneous computing across multiple platforms."

Contestants can choose to create an application in any category, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • Video/image processing.
  • Security.
  • Human computer interface
  • Data mining.
  • Gaming.
  • Physics processing.
  • Social networking & communication.

As Hegde explains, Accelerated Parallel Processing - or APP (formerly ATI Stream) - is a set of advanced hardware and software technologies that support OpenCL and enable highly parallel compute-capable GPUs to work in tandem with a system's CPU to accelerate apps beyond traditional x86 graphics and video processing.
