MeeGo 1.1 goes live

MeeGo logoThe Linux-based mobile MeeGo 1.1 OS introduced at the end of June is now released and ready for download. The software is offered as a dual-boot option that loads either it or Nokia's own Maemo OS, and the OS is meant for Nokia's flagship N900 smartphone, though it can be installed on other devices, including tablets. Nokia, curiously, hasn't yet officially acknowledged the software.

MeeGo wants the software to be used by device vendors and developers to start creating software for various device categories on Intel Atom and ARM7 architectures.

The release includes Core OS 1.1 for all user experiences. Netbook UX 1.1 provides a set of core apps for netbooks, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) UX 1.1 with a sample IVI home screen and taskbar built with Qt 4.7 and speech recognition, Handset UX 1.1 with basic UX for voice calling, SMS messaging, web browsing, music and video playback, photo viewing and connection management. The SDK 1.1 Beta will be out before the MeeGo Summit conference in Dublin.
