Skype launches group video calling for smartphones and tablets

Skype logoSkype has been in the news quite a lot recently. It launched new Mojis created in collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney just a few days ago and yesterday Skype announced that its iOS app now has native support for MS Office documents. Today the company is doing one better, announcing group video calling for smartphones and tablets.

Skype has started rolling out group video calling on iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones and tablets today in Western Europe and North America. It expects to complete the roll out in these markets over the next week. The company hopes to have this feature live for all users across the globe by March.

It promises group video calls in “glorious HD quality” and the stream will be optimized specifically for the device users are on. The SILK Super Wide Band audio codec promises crystal clear audio to provide an immersive experience.

Users are not limited in terms of the devices that they can use to join a video call. It doesn’t matter if they’re on a laptop, desktop or smartphone, they can easily start or join a group video conversation in Skype. The number of people that can take part in a video call has now been increased from 5 to 25.

The latest update to Skype for iOS and Android is rolling out today. Be patient if it hasn’t gone live for you it, the roll out in the aforementioned markets shouldn’t take more than a week.
