Microsoft: Windows Phone 10 Preview to launch in early 2015

Windows Phone logoMicrosoft this week introduced the new Windows 10 Preview for desktops, but Joe Belfiore, the man in charge of the smartphone business at the company, also confirmed during the San Francisco unveiling that Windows Phone 10 testing version would also be released in 2015.

Now Belfiore said in a very short tweet that Windows Phone 10 preview would be here in “a number of months,” but refused to provide additional information as the company now wants to focus on the PC side of the operating system.

“The Tech Preview program is aimed at PCs-only for quite awhile. We wont be talking about phones for a number of months,” Belfiore briefly said.

Previous reports indicated that Microsoft might be planning to release a testing version of Windows Phone 10 in January or February of 2015, before a possible debut of the final product in April 2015, alongside the PC version.

Microsoft is also working to make a significant change to its OS lineup by merging Windows Phone and Windows RT into a single platform which would be responsible with powering both tablets and smartphones.

What's more, people close to the matter indicated that Redmond would go even further and rebrand the operating system altogether, changing its name to just “Windows” to better capitalize on the popularity of the desktop OS and thus convince more potential buyers to try out its devices.

The same strategy was supposed to be used for the PC version of Windows, but Microsoft instead decided to go for Windows 10, a name that took everyone by surprise when it was announced earlier this week in San Francisco.

Microsoft's big goal is to offer a similar experience across all devices, no matter if you are using a PC, smartphone, or tablet powered by Windows.

A name that would suggest OS consistency across devices would clearly play a very important role, but it remains to be seen if the company actually wants to go for just “Windows” for the platform powering smartphones and tablets, or switch to something else.

The very first preview will thus be unveiled in early 2015, but there's still no info regarding the release date of the final product. Sources told us that Microsoft was considering a common release date for both desktops and mobile phones and if this is true, April 2015 is definitely going to be a very important month for each and everyone of us.
