Microsoft to quietly launch Windows 8.1 Update 2 on August 12

Windows 8.1 logoWindows 8.1 Update 2 development is said to be completed and although Microsoft hasn't yet provided any release date information, it appears that mid-August is very likely to bring us the final version of the product.

Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley says in a new report that Microsoft is very likely to roll out Windows 8.1 Update 2 as part of the August Patch Tuesday release, with the company to avoid holding a separate press conference for this debut.

Windows 8.1 Update 2

The reason is as simple as it could be: Windows 8.1 Update 2 would include only performance improvements and patches, so no new features are going to be added, which means that Microsoft is only looking into fast ways to deliver these fixes to all computers without too much fuss.

Windows 8.1 Update 2 was initially expected to include the Start menu, but according to people close to the matter, the company has delayed the debut of this feature until early 2015. Now Windows 9 is rumored to come with a Start menu, although nothing is confirmed on this front either.

Windows 8.1 Update 2 will obviously be offered free of charge to all users, so keep an eye on your calendars to count the days left till everyone gets it.
