Windows 8.1 Update 2 might arrive in August

Windows 8.1 logoa new rumor suggested that we might see Windows 8.1 Update 2, the next update to the operating system, in September of this year. According to a new report from Mary Jo Foley (ZDNET), her sources close to the matter are suggesting a release date of August. Either way, it appears that Microsoft is looking to speed up the time it takes to deliver operating system updates.

A report yesterday suggested that Windows 8.1 Update 2 would arrive this September. This was based on a claim from WZor, a Russian leaker. However, Mary Jo claims we might see it sooner. "The second update may include a version of a new Start menu which Microsoft showed off during its Build 2014 developer conference in early April. But according to my sources, this second update is unlikely to include the ability to run Metro-Style apps in floating windows on the desktop," Mary Jo explains.

Microsoft is apparently in a different mindset when it comes to Windows development these days. The company is reportedly looking to see how much they can get done within a much shorter timeframe. Mary Jo also expects "windowed" Metro apps to appear in Windows 9, rather than in Update 2.

Either way, information is still a bit blurry. One thing is for sure - we are expecting to see Windows 8.1 Update 2 in the next few months thanks to Microsoft's new rapid update delivery cadence.
