HTC will update Android on flagships for two years, teases repairs

HTC logoHTC will be providing all the main Android updates to its future flagship devices for a two-year period after their initial release in North America, the company has revealed. At the same time, a separate social media posting to celebrate Valentine's Day appears to be a tease for a new service, something which has been suggested to involve screen repairs.

Answering questions in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, representatives revealed that an initial decision not to update the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2 was being reconsidered. The two devices were not originally going to move to a later version of the mobile operating system, but the manufacturer is now exploring how to upgrade them to Android 4.4 after some customer feedback.

Following the publication by the company of a software updates page and infographic last month, in an attempt to "bring more transparency to the process," HTC advises it is "making a commitment to support all new North America flagship devices going forward with all major Android updates for two years after their release date." It is unclear if this will cover current-generation HTC devices, or if it will just cover upcoming launches such as the rumored HTC M8.

The posting on the HTC USA Twitter account showed a pair of HTC One smartphones with seemingly-smashed screens stacked and surrounded by light to resemble a heart. The accompanying text, "If only broken hearts were this easy to fix," combined with the image, is suggested by TechnoBuffalo to be for a repair service rather than for a new release. The company will reveal more details about its teased plans on February 18.
