Windows 8.1 update could land on March 11, more tweaks leaked

Windows 8.1 logoMore rumors for Microsoft's first major update for Windows 8.1 have surfaced. A more accurate date for release has been touted, along with more screenshots claiming to show the upcoming changes to Windows 8.1 Update 1, including a seemingly simpler way for users to shut down desktops, and a new search button at the top of the screen.

The images from Russian blog WZOR show the power and search options located on the Start Screen itself, rather than hidden away in the Charms menu. A new context menu for Live Tiles will be available, allowing for resizing options and removal by right-clicking, instead of using the app bar at the base of the screen. Unfortunately, there is still no sign of a Start Menu, though this could still return in Windows 9, codenamed "Threshold."

Windows 8.1 update could land on March 11

The earlier image leak for the update was accompanied by speculation that Microsoft will release the update sometime during the Microsoft Build 2014 conference in early April. Sources of ZDNet claim that it will be out on the 11th of March, along with the suggestion that Microsoft will be reducing the memory and disk space requirements of Windows itself. This would in theory help increase the performance of lower-powered and smaller Windows tablets.
