Google creates YouTube APIs for game video sharing, streams

YouTube logoGoogle has created a set of APIs for sending video content from games to YouTube. The new APIs will make it easier for game developers to offer players the option of uploading gameplay recordings to the site, as well as being able to broadcast gameplay footage live as the game is played on a console.

The announcement at the Game Developers Conference, picked up by CNET, gave Call of Duty: Black Ops II as an example of how the platform operates and can be used by players. Thousands of videos made by players in the game have been viewed "millions and millions" of times, according to Google.

In order to function as optimally as possible on low-powered devices like tablets, only one stream will originate from the device, leaving Google to deal with video stream quality and creating lower-resolution streams.

The move to help developers with YouTube video equals efforts for gaming videos from other sources. The Sony PlayStation 4 will have a dedicated Share button on the controller, allowing for simplified sharing of game content with friends on Facebook and other services, while brand continues to offer game-specific streaming of live gameplay and special events.
