Meebo details shutdown schedule

Meebo logoIn a support post on social service Meebo's site, the company has revealed that most of its products and services will be discontinued on July 11, 2012. Following the company's acquisition by Google earlier this month, Meebo's services and product offerings are being absorbed into the search giant's operations or discontinued entirely. So far, the Meebo Bar user-tracking feature is the only aspect that looks to be continuing.

On July 11, Meebo Messenger, Meebo sharing, Meebo Me widgets, and all Meebo Mobile apps will cease to function. Meebo Messenger users will be able to download their chat log histories until July 11, after which point the page will no longer be available. Meebo encourages users to download whatever data they need to from the site before the deadline, so as to avoid the loss of important data.

Interestingly, the page notes that "the Meebo Bar will still be available to site publishers and will see continued improvements and new features in the weeks and months ahead." Whether the Meebo Bar will continue under its current name or be rebranded by Google is unknown, but it would appear that the Bar -- which overlaid ads, direct connections to social networks and custom recommendations based on tracking users -- is one aspect of Meebo that Google is interested in keeping alive and working on.
