Twitter may allow 10,000 character tweets this year

Twitter logoTwitter has stuck with its 140 character limit for tweets through thick and thin though recently it decided to remove this limit from direct messages which now have a limit of 10,000 characters. According to a new report the company is considering doing the same for tweets, it’s said to be building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things much longer than its traditional 140 character limit.

That’s not to say that it’s going to shift from this limit completely, the microblogging network may introduce a separate feature that enables users to tweet longer, similar functionality is already provided by third-party services.

Citing multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans re/code reports that Twitter is considering a 10,000 character limit for this feature, that’s the same enhanced limit that it offers for direct messages now.

No launch date is set in stone for this new feature though it’s expected that it may arrive before the end of Q1 2016. The possibility exists that the character limit might fluctuate before the feature arrives.

Twitter has not confirmed or denied this report, so there’s no official side to this story yet, though if it does decide to make this change it’s going to make many of its users happy who don’t particularly like being restrained to just 140 characters.
