Nokia continues Android development; 10K prototypes already built

Nokia logoNokia is reportedly continuing to develop Android phones despite the buyout agreement with Microsoft. The report follows recent leaks pointing to a secret program that is said to have successfully installed Google's mobile OS on the Finnish cellphone maker's Lumia hardware.

Additional details posted by the Chinese site CTechnology and spotted by UnwiredView suggest the project is still advancing in the late development stage. Nokia is said to have already received a delivery of more than 10,000 prototype units, referred to as "Mountain View" and equipped with Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 8225Q chip.

Nokia was reportedly pushing the project forward as it considered splitting from its exclusive Windows Phone deal with Microsoft, which was up for renegotiation or termination sometime next year, though the Android project is not believed to have been used as a strategic push during the company's acquisition talks with Microsoft.

The proposed buyout of Nokia's phone division is expected to halt Android development, however Nokia is reportedly pushing forward with the project until the acquisition is finalized. Shareholders will have a chance to approve or reject the deal at a meeting in November.
