LG planning first flexible OLED smartphone for Q4 2013

LG logoLG is said to be planning its first flexible OLED smartphone for a Q4 release this year, reports the Wall Street Journal [sub. req.]. The company made the indication at its Q1 conference call, where it revealed that its net profits plunged 91 percent from the same period in 2012. The displays are not only curved, but are also shatter proof, which should help to address a long standing issue for smartphone owners who have inadvertently dropped their devices.

LG has been experimenting with curved displays for some time and has been in a race with Samsung to bring the first shipping device with the technology to market. It showed the technology at the 2008 SID Conference where it demonstrated a 320x240 prototype that was thought could be suited to wrist mounted smart devices among many other possible applications.

It recently revealed that it will be the first to bring a curved OLED TV to market before the end of the year. The 55-inch TV is said by the company to create a more immersive viewing experience. It is also supposed to reduce screen-edge visual distortion when viewed straight on. LG also plans to follow the first 55-inch model with larger models in the future.
