Sony launching new $130 Reader next month?

Sony logoSony may be set to release a new e-book reader sometime next month, according to a leaked advert. According to The Digital Reader, the Sony Reader PRS-T2 appeared in an advertisement by MCX Brands, a company that operates stores on US Marine Corps bases. The Reader is claimed to weigh six ounces and have a six-inch 800x600 E-Ink touchscreen with included stylus, as well as a two-month battery life.

It is also mentioned that it will ship with a number of pre-loaded titles, although it is not clear if it is for all units sold or just part of the advertisement's promotional offer. A Harry Potter book is included, as are 12 multi-language dictionaries, while support for titles in PDF, TXT, and EPUB formats, including those protected with Adobe DRM, is also present.

If the company launches a new Reader in the near future, it faces stiff competition from both Barnes & Noble and Amazon. An expanded Kindle lineup—including a 10-inch variant—is expected later this year, with some reports suggesting the new models will arrive sooner rather than later, while the Nook range has had its prices slashed, in a move that has been attributed to the Amazon speculation.
