Intel has been pushing the ultrabook in a big way for the past year. There've been several companies that have jumped on the ultrabook bandwagon, but none of the machines have been a major success so far. That could change with Intel announcing that 75 new ultrabook designs are coming soon.
Intel also says that it expects the price of some of the machines to be as low $699. That would make for some of the cheapest ultrabook designs yet since pricing tends to start at about $800 for the roughly 21 ultrabooks currently on the market. The new designs will bring some nice upgraded features as well including touchscreens for Windows 8 and hybrid designs.
The tip on the new models come from Intel's general manager for PC client group, Kirk Skaugen. He said, "I think we can deliver the best of a tablet, and the best in what (users) know in a notebook."
Intel recently stated it would launch a massive advertising campaign costing "hundreds of millions of dollars" to push the virtues of its ultrabook design. The campaign is the largest since the platform launched. Along with a big advertising push, Intel also plans to create what it calls "ultrabook experience zones" in retail stores. The focus in these experience zones will be to help set the ultrabook apart from the traditional notebook in the mind of consumers.
It's not clear exactly when the new ultrabook designs will start hitting the market, but Windows 8 isn't expected until later this year.
"In order to be compliant to that section, you have to meet a series of tests that Intel is putting in the market place," he said.
"Intel plans to ensure ultrabooks have a consistent experience. And if it's too thick it won't be called an ultrabook. It won't be allowed to be called an ultrabook because ultrabook is a trademark of Intel and we can protect the trademark."
