Samsung Unveils '8K QLED TV' with AI-driven

Samsung logoWhile LG Electronics is bringing its OLED technology to the large, 88-inch OLED TV at CES, rival Samsung Electronics has on display a 85-inch 8K QLED TV, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to convert low-resolution images to 8K-high quality.

Samsung said it has collected and analyzed millions of video databases to self-convert low quality content to higher quality by recovering visual and audio effects in areas such as blurriness, brightness and background sound.

When the TV is fed with a low-resolution image, it seeks for an optimal filter in the database in order to correct the images' brightness and black colors. Samsung claims that its AI high-definition conversion technology makes it possible to create natural images, with no color gradation.

In addition, each scene is classified according its image quality characteristics, and parameters such as the contrast and clarity is automatically adjusted for each area of the picture.

The AI high-definition conversion technology also automatically optimizes the sound of the TV according to the characteristics of the image. For instance, in a sports game, the background sound is increased in order for a more realistic feeling. In a concert scene, the low sound is emphasized in order to provide a richer overall sound experience for the viewer.

The company plans to launch additional lineups by using the technology for 8K QLED TVs of more than 65 inches, with the AI TVs available for sale in the latter half of the year, according to Samsung.
