MediaTek's upcoming Helio X30 chipset will allegedly come

MediaTek logoMediaTek might have gained recognition at the international level by creating low-cost chipsets for smartphones and tablets, but all signs indicate that the Taiwan-based chip maker has its eyes set at competing in the upper-range chip categories as well.

The first step that MediaTek took towards the high-end segment of the smartphone market was the Helio X10, a chipset with enough processing prowess to be included in multiple mid-range handsets such as the HTC One M9+ or the Meizu MX5. Back in May, MediaTek unveiled the upper mid-range Helio X20, the world's first mobile SoC with a deca-core CPU. Although chances are that the first mobile devices to make use of the Helio X20 won't reach the market until Q1 2016, a new rumor from China claims that MediaTek has already started working on an even faster chipset, the Helio X30.

According to a new report from the Chinese media, the upcoming Helio X30 will come with notable improvements across the board compared to the Helio X20 SoC.

The Helio X20 chipset integrates a tri-cluster CPU with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4Ghz, four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2GHz, and a pair of scorching hot ARM Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.5Ghz. If this new report is to be believed, the MediaTek Helio X30 will come with an even more fragmented deca-core CPU, a quad-cluster design with two ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1GHz, two Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5Ghz, two Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2GHz and four of those powerful ARM Cortex-A72 cores clocked at 2.5GHz.

Moving on to the GPU, the Helio X30 is said to feature ARM's Mali-T880 GPU, ARM's fastest mobile GPU architecture at the moment, and a notable improvement over the Mali-T800 GPU used by MediaTek on the Helio X20. Another rumored detail about the Helio X30 is support for 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a feat that was missing from the Helio X20.

If these details turn out to be accurate, a hefty improvement in terms of total processing power is to be expected from the Helio X30 compared to the Helio X20.

The report doesn't mention anything about a possible release date for the Helio X30, but it's probably safe to assume that the first Helio X30-powered smartphones won't be launched until early 2016 at the earliest.
