Remember many, many years ago when people would actually buy multiple batteries for their mobile phones? Well those phones eventually evolved to the point where they could last for days on a single charge, but fast forward to today, it feels like deja vu because there are plenty of us out there who carry around huge battery packs to charge our smartphones when they run out of battery.
Well, one day perhaps in the next few years, we can look back at this and laugh because hopefully by then, phone batteries would have evolved to the point where they can last several days on a single charge. This is thanks to the efforts of scientists and researchers, such as those at Stanford, who have recently found a way to potentially double or triple the life of a battery.
According to their research, they have come up with a technique that allows them to create a denser and more efficient lithium in the battery’s anode through the use of a nanoscopic carbon shield, which helps to keep the unstable chemical in check, thus lengthening its lifespan.
The end result is a battery that will not only hold its charge for much longer, but won’t decay as fast, and would be potentially safer. After all, no one likes waking up to their phone on fire, right? However before you get too excited, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done before the battery can be made mainstream and into a consumer product, but at least we know that we’re headed in the right direction.
