Samsung launching Android Wear smartwatch, high-end Tizen smartphone this year

Tizen logoSamsung has been in the smartwatch game for a while now. Its first product the Galaxy Gear didn’t do that well on the market. Samsung recently rolled out its latest smartwatch, the Gear 2, which ditched Android in favor of Tizen for the operating system.

However, Samsung isn't going to leave Android behind forever for its smartwatches. Samsung executive Yoon Han-kil stated that Samsung would be launching an Android Wear-based smartwatch later this year. Yoon didn’t give any details on the smartwatch or exactly when it would launch, but he indicated that he wants future Samsung smartwatches to be compatible with all Android devices.

Yoon also stated that Samsung would launch a high-end Tizen smartphone in Q2 2014. He continued, adding that a mid-range smartphone running Tizen would follow soon after.

Yoon said, "We had tried to launch (Tizen) with DoCoMo and Orange ... but couldn't because of poor market conditions. We have changed our strategy and will release the phones in a few countries where we can do well."

Samsung still wants to build an ecosystem around the Tizen operating system to help reduce its future dependence on Android.

The executive noted that the Galaxy S5 is selling very well and is expected to outsell the S4. Yoon also mentioned a new Galaxy Note coming this year with a "new form factor." He didn’t offer details on that device other than it was coming in the second half of the year.
