Samsung unveils Gear Fit, a curved, fitness-oriented wristband

Samsung logoSamsung today announced the Gear Fit, a curved wristband for fitness technology enthusiasts. The Gear Fit is a lighter, more streamlined complement of sorts to the Tizen-powered Gear 2 smartwatches that were announced late last week.

Available worldwide starting in April, "[t]he Samsung Gear Fit was designed to comfortably contour to consumers’ wrists while offering a vivid Super AMOLED display," Samsung said. "It provides much more than an everyday fitness band, keeping consumers up to date [with] instant notifications from Galaxy smartphones such as incoming calls, emails, SMS, alarm, S-planner, [and] 3rd party apps while consumers are on the move so they can stay connected. Changeable straps in Black, Orange and Mocha Grey will let users express their individual style, changing the look of the Gear Fit to match their outfit or mood for any type of activity."

The display is 1.84 inches with a 432×128 resolution, and the watch weighs just 27g. Its 210 mAh battery is expected to provide typical usage of about three to four days. It connects to Galaxy smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy wireless technology. Sensors include an accelerometer, gyro, and heart rate sensor. A pedometer, stopwatch, and timer are also included. The watch is IP67 dust and water resistant.

Like other Gear watches, the Gear Fit can interact with Galaxy smartphones, rejecting calls and viewing some kinds of notifications from compatible Samsung and third-party apps. All of the watches record fitness data into the S Health app available on Galaxy phones. However, compatibility with other Android phones and phones from other ecosystems is not currently available.
