WP8 now on three-quarters of Windows Phone handsets

Windows Phone logoMicrosoft's Windows Phone 8 platform is by far the predominant install among owners of Windows Phone devices, with three-quarters of Windows Phone devices worldwide running Windows Phone 8. This according to figures from AdDuplex, which earlier pointed to Nokia's dominance among Windows Phone manufacturers. The new figures seem to indicate that at least some Windows Phone users were upgrading within the ecosystem after it was revealed last year that devices running Windows Phone 7.X would not be receiving an update to the latest Windows Phone version.

In the United States, less than 15 percent of Windows Phone device users are operating on Windows Phone 7. More than a third of Windows Phone 8 users are on AT&T, while 27.5 percent are on Verizon, 20.6 use T-Mobile, 8.4 use MetroPCS, and the remainder use another service.

Similar to AdDuplex's earlier numbers on Nokia's domination of the overall Windows Phone device market, the soon-to-be Microsoft-owned Lumia line dominates the Windows Phone 8 picture even more. Fully 90 percent of Windows Phone 8 devices are Nokia devices, according to AdDuplex's figures. HTC is a distant second with seven percent share, while Samsung and Huawei have 1.8 and 1.3 percent shares, respectively.
