Android finally Overtakes iOS in terms of mobile usage

Android logoWhen it comes to install base, it is no secret that Android is the king. However in terms of usage statistics, oddly enough iOS has always managed to stay ahead of Google’s mobile operating system, at least until recently where figures released by NetApplications has revealed that Android has finally overtaken iOS in terms of mobile usage.

However Android’s win over iOS is not by a huge margin. According to the figures, Android’s usage (line in red) share rose from 43.75% in June to 44.62% in July. This is compared to iOS (line in blue), which you can see in the graph above, has been going downhill and dropped from 45.61% in June to 44.19% in July, allowing Android to overtake it by a tiny fraction.

NetApplications measures their data by combining both smartphones and tablets, so in this case it certainly does seem to in line with Tim Cook’s recent admission that iPad sales have been on the decline. According to Cook, he believes that this is because customers are anticipating the next-gen model (which is said to feature a Touch ID sensor).

It will be interesting to see if Apple can regain their market share. The Cupertino company is expected to announce new iPhones next month, both of which are said to sport significantly larger displays and a new design which will supposedly help generate even more sales than ever, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
