Sony: 5.3 million PS4s sold worldwide ahead of Japanese launch

Sony logoAs of February 8, Sony has sold 5.3 million PlayStation 4s since the console's North American launch this past November 15.

That means the system has already sold about 1.1 million units this calendar year, after reaching 4.2 million in sales in 2013. That's a definite and expected slowdown from the holiday season, when the system sold 2.1 million units in its first two weeks or so on the market and another 2.1 million in the month of December.

Sony has now surpassed its self-imposed target of 5 million PS4 sales through the end of March. The system is set to be released in Sony's home country of Japan on Saturday, which should further boost sales ahead of the end of the company's fiscal year. Last week, Sony announced that it sold nearly twice as many PS4 units as Microsoft sold Xbox One units in the US in January.

Microsoft has not publicly disclosed Xbox One sales data since a January earnings report showed 3.9 million worldwide shipments for the 2013 calendar year. The Wii U sold roughly 5.9 million units worldwide from its late 2012 launch through the end of 2013.

The PS4 is selling at a much faster pace than the PlayStation 3 did after its November 2006 launch; Sony's previous system took roughly 10 months to reach 5.63 million worldwide sales, according to earnings reports.
